No reggae maranhense, assim como existem vários artistas solo queridos pelo público regueiro, também existem algumas bandas, como é o caso dos "The Gladiators", fundada no final dos anos 60 e formada pelo saudoso Alberth Griffiths, responsável por muitos hits, como "Chatty Chatty Mouth" e "Look is Deceiving", entre outros. Antes dos Gladiators, poucos sabem, mas uma parte dos futuros membros da banda eram integrantes de um grupo chamado "The Defenders", um grupo do estilo dub.
"The Gladiators" é uma banda histórica que permanece em atividade, mesmo com algumas mudanças nos vocais, como no caso do cantor Droop Lion.
