Num período em que Bob Marley mal era mencionado na Jamaica, já existia um nome forte quando o assunto era música local. Esse personagem era Desmond Dekker, o primeiro grande astro do ska. Dekker foi notado pela primeira vez na Inglaterra com "007", um compacto editado pela pirâmide em 1967 que chegou às paradas.
Este single, assim como uma corrente de mais de 20 sucessos seguidos, incluindo "Hey Grandma", liderou as paradas jamaicanas, e vários deles também se tornaram populares na Inglaterra. Cantando numa mistura de inglês jamaicano com patois creole, bem peculiar, Dekker chegou até a ter um top ten hit nos EUA com "The Israelites", editado no selo Uni em 1969.
Aqui no Brasil, "The Israelites" apareceu em uma coletânea, apesar do grande sucesso que a canção alcançou pelo mundo. No Maranhão, o maior hit do astro jamaicano é "Why Fight" (o melô da Diamante Negro).
Desmond Dekker faleceu em 25 de maio de 2006 em Londres, Reino Unido.
(English) — Desmond Dekker was one of the first Jamaican artists to achieve international fame
At a time when Bob Marley was poorly regarded in Jamaica, there was already a strong name when it came to local music. That character was Desmond Dekker, ska's first big star. Dekker was first noticed in England with "007", a single released by Pyramid in 1967 that reached the parades.
This single, as well as a string of more than 20 hits in a row, including "Hey Grandma", topped the Jamaican charts, and several of them also became popular in England. Singing in a very peculiar mix of Jamaican English and Creole Patois, Dekker even had a top ten hit in the USA with "The Israelites", released on the Uni label in 1969.
Here in Brazil, "Os Israelitas" appeared in a compilation album, despite the great success that the song achieved around the world. In Maranhão, the Jamaican star's biggest hit is "Why Fight" (the Diamante Negro song).
Desmond Dekker passed away on May 25, 2006 in London, United Kingdom.
