Como mencionado na edição anterior, o nome "Ska" é cercado por controvérsias. Alguns afirmam que é uma onomatopeia que imita a peculiar força ao tocar guitarra, uma característica herdada pelo reggae (chamada de "tchaka tchaka").
Outros juram que sua origem está na gíria das ruas, sendo uma abreviação da exclamação "skavooviel". De qualquer forma, o ritmo vibrante do Ska conquistou primeiramente os guetos onde nasceu e, em breve, seria aceito por plateias em toda a Jamaica.

As mentioned in the previous edition, the name "ska" is surrounded by controversy. Some claim it is an onomatopoeia that mimics the unique force of playing guitar, a feature inherited by reggae (referred to as "tchaka tchaka").
Inspirado pelas grandes bandas americanas, o Ska se destacou como um estilo tocado por grandes conjuntos, com ênfase nos instrumentos de sopro. Os Skatalites eram a banda principal nesse cenário.

As mentioned in the previous edition, the name "ska" is surrounded by controversy. Some claim it is an onomatopoeia that mimics the unique force of playing guitar, a feature inherited by reggae (referred to as "tchaka tchaka").
Others swear its origin is in street slang, being an abbreviation of the exclamation "skavooviel." Nevertheless, the vibrant rhythm of ska first conquered the ghettos where it was born and soon gained acceptance among audiences throughout Jamaica.
Inspired by great American bands, ska emerged as a style played by large ensembles, with a focus on brass instruments. The Skatalites were the main band in this scene.
