A situação não anda nada bem para o lado da música jamaicana neste mês de abril. No último dia 5 de abril, faleceu um dos cantores mais queridos dos salões de festa do Maranhão, o cantor Rockie Campbell, autor da música “Why Do People” (Melo de Penalva). Segundo informações colhidas por amigos, Rockie faleceu em virtude de uma queda.

Se já não bastasse a perda do último dia 5, no sábado, dia 20/04/2024, mais uma baixa ocorreu no reggae, desta vez a morte do lendário Tony Tuff.
Tony iniciou a carreira em 1969 como membro do trio vocal “African Brothers”, ao lado de Sugar Minott e Derrick Howard. O grupo se desfez nos anos 70.
Quando assim, Tony Tuff exerceu outra profissão além da música. Em carreira solo, lançou vários álbuns, singles e compilações ao longo dos anos 80.
Em 2000, o trio “African Brothers” foi reformado, onde entraram em estúdio e gravaram o álbum “Mysterious Nature” de 2014.
Durante esta semana, estarei fazendo uma homenagem a Rockie Campbell e Tony Tuff, mostrando vários de seus sucessos musicais e uma série de documentários sobre suas vidas.

The situation for Jamaican music is not looking good this April. On the 5th of April, one of the most beloved singers of the Maranhão party halls, Rockie Campbell, author of the song “Why Do People” (Melo de Penalva), passed away. According to information gathered from friends, Rockie died as a result of a fall.
As if the loss on the 5th wasn’t enough, on Saturday, April 20, 2024, reggae suffered another blow with the death of the legendary Tony Tuff.
Tony began his career in 1969 as a member of the vocal trio “African Brothers”, alongside Sugar Minott and Derrick Howard. The group disbanded in the 70s.
At that point, Tony Tuff pursued another profession besides music. In his solo career, he released several albums, singles, and compilations throughout the 80s.
In 2000, the “African Brothers” trio was reformed, where they went into the studio and recorded the 2014 album “Mysterious Nature”.
During this week, I will be paying tribute to Rockie Campbell and Tony Tuff, showcasing many of their musical hits and a series of documentaries about their lives.
